Excerpt from Ahn-Œhlschlæger's Pronouncing Method of the German Language: Designed for Instruction in Schools and for Private Study; First Course: Exercises, Reader, Vocabularies, Conversations, Collection of Words, Etc
Pronunciation, its principles and notation, which characterize this Series, remain, on the whole, unchanged. In fact, nothing else has been published which is so readily understood, and so easily applied to practice. As this system of representing the sounds of the German language by English equivalents. Those who wish to be their own teachers, may follow the rules here laid down, with perfect confidence that, by paying proper attention thereto, they will acquire a correct pronunciation of the language, and be understood wherever German is spoken. For practice and self-instruction in current reading, the lessons with interlinear notation in English characters (pp. 121 to 156) will be found a most valuable help.
Having mastered the ordinary difficulties of pronunciation, the pupil is introduced to the First Course proper, or Exercises. Here the chief aim has been to conduct him by the shortest and easiest road to a sound practical acquaintance with the language. Accordingly, the exercises begin with the simplest forms of the most familiar nouns, ind gradually embrace the other parts of speech, the declensions, degrees of comparison, pronouns, verbs, etc., etc. In this part of the book, necessary rules only are given, the pupil is taught every thing by practice, and left to study the theory at a subsequent stage. To enlist his interest, however, and, as far as possible, make the acquisition of the language as much a pleasure as a labor, is the object of the Reader. It contains pleasing narrations, vivid descriptions, and as learning> tospeak is more especially a direct object simple and instructive dialogues and conversations; in a word, it supplies such materials as cannot fail to stimulate the interest in the study. In the Notes the pupil is provided with such help as may be useful and encouraging, and in the case of words or idioms either forgotten or not yet learned, the Vocabularies, which form a necessary part of such a book as this, must be consulted; they contain every word and idiom in the text.
