I may be allowed to speak of his death not only as a loss to the world of letters, but as a personal bereavement of no ordinary kind to those who enjoyed his intimacy. In under taking to go on with the work which my dear friend, and former tutor, had begun, I have felt no common responsibility. It will be my best reward if I am able to think that the volume now finished would have given him satisfaction.
Mr. Riddell's notes extend over the first three books, together with the seventh and eighth. He had just begun his commentary upon the fourth, when his work was cut short.
