This book explores the great shift that took place in the late 16th century from the strict rules governing musical compositions in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance to the flexible melodic style loosely referred to as the Baroque. The author offers us many musical examples, presenting original scores with modernized versions side-by-side so that a modern performer or musician can easily understand and play the music of that time. The author points out that this shift is often attributed to the influence of the new Counter-Reformation ideals instituted by the Church, but their influence was not as decisive as we might think. In fact, the author traces the roots of the Baroque style back to a series of subtle but profound changes in musical notation, and argues that these changes were primarily driven by a new approach to the human voice prevalent in the humanist culture of the Italian Renaissance.
