Distinct as the waves; but one as the sea. Clearly recognizing the changes which were wrought in the political structure of the Union by the War of 1812, we shall try to ascertain how these changes were brought about and how the war produced them.

The treaty of peace by which Great Britain acknowledged its rebellious colonies to be free, sovereign, and' independent was signed on the 3d of September, 1783. During the war the colonies had been held together under the Articles of Confederation, and by common dangers and necessities.
