Excerpt from Catalogue of the Historical Library of Andrew Dickson White, First President of Cornell University, Vol. 1: The Protestant Reformation and Its Forerunners
The titles of all books printed before 1600 are given in full, from both title-page and colophon, with indication of line-endings. Only epigraphs, texts, prefaces, and other irrelevant matter are omitted, their place being taken by a descriptive word. Ligatures and abbreviations are spelt out. Of books of the 17th century full titles are not given, but all omissions are indicated. Oi later books, save of such as seemed rare and curious enough to be treated like incunabula, the titles have been abridged at will (though sparingly) and without signs of ellipsis. The imprint - properly no part of the title - has been remanded to the note, except in books older than 1600; and even in these it-is repeated in the note when the transcribed form of it is in any way obscure.
In the titles, italics are used for words inserted by the cataloguer, whether (1) in description or (2) in the Spelling out of ligatures and abbreviations. But, with the exception of the constantly recurring 'at ena in titles of the era of colophons and of etc.' in modern titles, all descriptive additions are also bracketed. In titles antedating 1700, italics have also been used for words which in a Gothic title-page are printed in Latin type, or the reverse. In the notes, titles are themselves italicized.
