This book, an 18th-century poem, satirically tells the story of the controversy between the Bishop of Bangor and a group of clergymen (known as the Convocation) of the Church of England in the early 1700s. The controversy derived from the Bishop's support for the principles of Protestantism and his rejection of the idea of the divine right of kings. This, the author shows, caused a great deal of consternation among the clergy at the time, who saw his ideas as a threat to their authority, which they believed came directly from God and not from man. The book explores the conflict between the Bishop and the Convocation as a microcosm of the larger struggles between reason and authority, individual conscience and social power, and the role of religion in society during the 18th century. Ultimately, the Bishop's ideas foreshadowed the Enlightenment and proved influential in the development of modern religious thought and practice.
