Since white settlement the country has been divided into vast ranges used for grazing. Cattle thrive on the grassy plains where water is supplied by windmills and earth storage tanks. Sheep and goats are pastured on the mountainous tracts, because they can climb and graze over steep slopes that are less accessible to cattle.
