Zur Verofi'entlichung dieses Heftes bestimmt hauptsachlich für Collegen und Studirende, dann aber auch für die Schüler der obersten Classe bin ich entschieden worden durch eine Stelle in der genialen Gelegenheitsschrift Dedekind's stetig keit und. Irrationale Zahlen, welche lautet: und man gelangt auf diese Weise zu wirklichen Beweisen von Sätzen wie z. B.: 1/?ü |/tf, welche meines Wissens bisher nie bewiesen sind. Er hat Recht in Bezug auf die überwiegende Mehrzahl der elementaren Lehrbücher, Unrecht in Bezug auf die Lehrer, welche sich glücklicherweise an ihre Lehrbücher nicht sehr zu kehren pflegen. Was dem Unterricht in der Arithmetik heutzutage viel mehr fehlt als die Strenge im Einzelnen, ist nach meiner Ueberzmgung, welche ich bereits im Jahre 1877 auszusprechen Gelegenheit hatte, ein f estes Ziel. Nur wenn dieser Unterrichtszweig in sich selbst folgerichtig entwickelt ist, kann er seine wichtigste Aufgabe: die logische Entwickelung der Schüler in erster Linie zu fördern, völlig erfüllen.
