Recensione:
“This enthralling, suspenseful debut novel...has the feel of a grim fairy tale...Of the many riches it offers, it is the winning lead character, a lonely teen brave enough to have a dream despite her impoverished circumstances, who will capture readers’ hearts.”–Booklist, starred
“Mystery, witchcraft, and a precocious young narrator enliven Pietroni’s debut...Ruby's Spoon is one of those bright narrators whose insights into the treacheries of the adult world are heartrending...Fans of Hardy, Dickens, and more recently, Michel Faber and Sarah Waters will find much to enjoy.” –Publishers Weekly
"The mystery at the core of Ruby’s Spoon is complex and layered... Pietroni keeps Isa Fly a mystery to both the townsfolk and the reader throughout the book, saving the big reveal for a very satisfying ending. In turns modern and folkloric, this is an ambitious and unique debut."—Historical Novels Review
“Some novels are written; others are conjured. Ruby's Spoon, by Anna Lawrence Pietroni, is of the latter kind, and therefore rare, especially for a debut...Lawrence Pietroni is a masterful storyteller, and her style has an incantatory quality reminiscent of Toni Morrison...Ruby's Spoon is astonishing in its ambition and scope, deftly exploring themes of guilt, shame, loyalty, grief and revenge, while maintaining its taut suspense throughout.”—Newsday
