Let me say this very firmly. The Clint book is fabulous. There have been quite a few books on him, but this is the definitive one - by a very wide margin. That you produced it in so little time is a miracle it looks as though it took years. I have only had time to dip quickly into the golden words, but what I have read is very impressive. Richard knows his subject so well and his style, invariably authoritative, now seems much more relaxed and confident, brooking no argument as they say. In illustrated book terms it is magnificent, a fantastic succession of wonderful images. Congratulations for a singular publishing triumph. It should and deserves to be a huge success, and could turn out to be the best film book of 2010 --George Perry, Film Critic

Richard Schickel is the author of more than thirty books. He is the creator of an equal number of documentary films, including portraits of Charlie Chaplin, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen. Over the past three decades he has made eighteen such directorial portraits, which, taken together, constitute a unique record of the history of filmmaking since the beginning of sound film production. Since 1965, he has been a movie reviewer for Life, Time and Time.com.
