Those who try to manipulate God to do their will can never know the joy of totally relying on His strength and wisdom. Jesus said that those who wanted to follow Him must deny themselves and take up His cross and follow Him. That statement shocked the disciples. They had assumed being Jesus' disciple was more about gaining prominent positions of authority, becoming important, and acquiring wealth and power. But He was calling them to die to self by setting aside their own plans, interests, and desires and instead embracing God's plans-whatever those plans might be. The disciples would need to center their lives around God's will so that Jesus' name would be glorified and people would be drawn to Him. Jesus told His disciples that He would make the necessary sacrifice for sin by dying on the cross. His sacrifice would make the gift of eternal life available to all who call on His name. Jesus asked those who wanted to follow Him if they were willing to die to self so that God's will could be accomplished in their lives. If they were committed to living as those who have been "crucified with Christ," He would help them accomplish that goal. They need only rely on His strength.
