Excerpt from A Life of Washington, Vol. 1 of 2
In compiling this work, the writer has availed himself of all the sources of information within his reach and though possessed of materials for a much larger one, has compressed them in a man ner which, it is hoped, will bring it within the reach of those to whom it is peculiarly addressed. Much of the information concerning the private life and habits of Washington, was derived from the information of his contemporaries then living, but most of them now no more, and from the means afforded by the present most estimable lady who is now in possession of Mount Vernon.

The author consulted with Washington's contemporaries as well as sources close to the present owner of Mount Vernon to present a comprehensive account of the man's service, sacrifices and hardships he endured to serve his country. Washington's role in the Revolutionary War is meticulously detailed, as are the ideas and themes which informed his leadership and character, such as his bold military leadership, perseverance, strength, tenacity and selflessness. For those who wish to inspire their children with noble examples, this book is an invaluable resource, and will help instill a sense of patriotism and veneration for the Father of their Country.
