Nakazawa Keiji is the creator of Barefoot Gen (Last Gasp, 2004-2009), one of the most storied manga of all time. He was just over six years old when the atomic bomb destroyed his home city of Hiroshima and killed his father, older sister, and younger brother. Despite living only a mile from the epicenter of the blast, he and his mother miraculously survived. A sign painter and then a manga artist, Nakazawa pioneered the first atomic-bomb manga in the late 1960s and went on to produce the ten-volume Barefoot Gen series, detailing the experiences of his alter ego, Gen, before and after August 6, 1945.
He is professor of history emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is a leading translator of classics of Hiroshima literature.
