L'autore:
Ukrainian-born Russian dramatist and novelist. Gogol's humorous and satirical writings formed the basis of 19th century Russian realist literature. This literary giant is famous for his masterpiece, Myortvye dushi (Dead Souls). It is counted among the best novels in the whole of world literature. Many of its sayings have become Russian proverbs. In his writings, Gogol tastefully combines Ukrainian folktales with his memories of Ukrainian countryside. This combination is the basis of his eight narratives which were published in 1831-1832. These appeared in two volumes under the title, Vechera na khutore bliz Dikanki (Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka). These short stories were very well received. In 1835 his works, Mirgorod and Arabeski (Arabesques) were published. Mirgorod contained the short story Taras Bulba, which was expanded into a novel in 1842. In 1836, his play The Inspector General made its appearance. Several critics regard it as one of the finest plays of Russian literature. The first edition of Gogol's collected works was published in 1842.
