Born on a Saskatchewan farm in 1917, Abram Hoffer graduated with a B.S. in agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1938. He also has a Master's Degree in agricultural chemistry and a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He got his M.D. from the University of Toronto in 1949 and completed psychiatric training in 1954. His early work led to the use of vitamin B3 in treating schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions and he demonstrated the effectiveness of niacin as an anticholesterol treatment. Dr. Hoffer was involved in the formation of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine and has published over 600 reports and articles as well as 30 books. Recently, he was awarded the Dr. Rogers Prize for his contribution to alternative and complimentary medicine.
