THE SHEPHERD'S SONG is one of the most unusual and delightful books I have ever read. It hooked my attention from the first page and held it to the last! I found it remarkably compelling from the outset. Rarely have I read a novel which so poignantly juxtaposes tragedy with hope without becoming excessively sentimental or mawkish. It is an effortless read, but not an easy one - harrowing and uplifting by turns, it is impossible not to be moved by its artlessly engaging narrative. The characters are believable and likeable, each one deftly painted with a few expert strokes. The chain of connected storylines convincingly shows how one simple and apparently futile act of love can release a deluge of redemption and reconciliation. I really recommend this book. My husband has heard me talk about how much I love this book so much that he is planning on reading it next. If I could I would probably buy several copies and give out to friends and family - I liked it that much. I hope Betsy and Laurie write another novel together.
