Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. JERUSALEM. Before entering the precincts of the holy city, let us cast a hurried glance over the glorious pages of its past history. The people of Israel wished to have a strong and fortified city, a political as well as a religious centre, which could be the seat of their government, the residence of their kings, and the stronghold against the enemy in times of war. Adonizedek, one of the five kings vanquished by Joshua, took refuge with his people, the Jebusites, in the fortress of Mount Zion. From this impregnable place, he defied the army of David. "I will send out against ye, only the blind and the lame," cried out Adonizedek in mocking tones; "these alone will suffice to do away with ye." David, the warrior king, the anointed of the Lord, scorning the bravado of the Jebusite, attacked the fortress, put the garrison to the sword, in accordance with the barbarous law of the times, and then he and his conquering host encamped on the three great mounts: Zion, Akra and Moriah. The poet-king gazed joyfully at his victorious troops. David took up his harp and lifted up his voice to Jehovah, in a song of triumph and rejoicing. The sweet strains of his instrument, the wondrous charm of the king's melodious voice, filled all with untold delight. When David laid aside the harp, he contemplated the glorious scene about him. The three mounts rose before him, grand and imposing; then to the East he saw the deep valley of Jehoshaphat with that winding stream, the brook Kidron passing by it; to the South, the narrow valley of Hinnom, forming at one end almost a rugged and steep chasm, and finally to the West, he beheld Mt .
