Sonny and Emmy’s good friends, County Sheriff Rebecca Steen Braun and husband Dr. Gordon Braun, the county coroner, investigate the death and find no obvious reason for the woman’s demise. Strange and deeper forces engulf the events at the Spiritualist Center as a man by the name of Osman Portes and his own ‘gifted one’, Mother Ruby Blanchett, appear on the scene to create mystery and mayhem for the villagers.Characters from the first two novels reappear including the Bonner twins, Con and Lon, and their wives, Bert and Ernie. The antics of good old Shep Bowers are chronicled and, of course, Billy Cochran, Sonny’s boyhood chum, is a central character as he struggles with work-related and personal problems. Sandra Jones Cochran, the grieving wife of Billy Cochran, becomes involved with the Spiritualists with tragic results. The trials and tribulations of the villainess Syl Savage Harmon surges to the forefront as one of her former husbands, a man by the name of Jimmy Sessions, appear back in Sherwood after a long absence.Sonny Mac has turned into an erstwhile crime detective by assisting in solving deadly crime mysteries as outlined in Sulfur Creek and Sycamore. However, Sonny has promised Emmy that he will never again get involved in crime solving, given his penchant for risk and injury. Of course, he does get involved and is instrumental in assisting in the solution to the mystery.
