Opening the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition the art critic Robert Hughes declared 'I don't think there is any doubt that the present commercialization of art at its top end is a cultural obscenity.' Has art really just become one more dish at the banquet of capitalist greed and if so can its reputation as a means of transcending everyday experience be revived. On his first day at art school the ingenuous Brian Jones meets the flamboyant Chloe and Essex twins Issa and Bella, enigmatic Hector Lugg, a former dosser researching his PH.D and Samson, a half Aboriginal mystic. Together the form The FauxNaif dedicated to restoring the 'aesthetic' to art. However, in an artistic and cultural environment where superficial form dominates significant content, price determines value and novelty usurps innovation theirs will be no easy task. Can The FauxNaif save the world from artistic anarchy or will they feed it yet one more morsel to satisfy the public appetite for mass media spectacle? The Ivory Basement offers an acerbic view of Postmodern life and art.
