At a time when Cotton was no longer King and the Lancashire mills remained idle, the Etherow-O’Donnell and Akroyd families, together with their friends, find themselves battling against a new enemy – a lack of work and widespread starvation. Famine stalked the land in the North West of England, as the forces of the Confederacy and the Union battled it out in a war between Americans – brother against brother – sister against sister. The outcome of the Civil War would determine the future of the United States – whether democracy and liberty would triumph, or a new Confederate States of America emerge – a separate country with a distinct form of government based on chattel-slavery and despotism. Just as Americans found themselves divided, so too did the antagonistic classes in the cotton-manufacturing region of England. Once again the author skilfully weaves his weft of fiction into the warp of historical reality. An exciting read from start to finish

L'autore:
My father, Malc Cowle, is well qualified as a storyteller. He lived in small towns on Manchester’s periphery, moving to the city at the age of sixteen to commence his engineering apprenticeship. Born in 1944, he qualified as a Draughtsman in 1965. He subsequently worked in the engineering and shipbuilding industries and spent many years as an active trade unionist and political campaigner. He joined the Communist Party in 1970 and held office as North West District Organiser, National Fund Organiser, National Election Agent and Greater Manchester Area Organiser. Later, in 1981, he became my Dad. Like many before him he was blacklisted by the Engineering Employers for his trade union and political activities. Unable to obtain work in engineering he set himself up as a made to measure bicycle frame builder. As a result he made many friends amongst the cycling community. (One of the frames he built is on show at Manchester's Science and Industry Museum.) The Engineering Employers' Federation maintain they never operated a black list. He says 'the simple fact is they are liars. They used lists produced by The Economic League.' Liberated from factory life he created a new career for himself and became a made to measure bicycle frame builder. Throughout his life he was and is a keen cyclist. He is now retired and, after three years in Dentdale in the north-west of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, lives back in the city he loves so much - Manchester. Originally written for me and for his own amusement, all his books are available as paper backs and can be purchased online.
