The story of Dr Thomas Nadauld Brushfield (1828 - 1919) richly deserves to be told. He was one of those very rare people who truly deserve the epithet polymath. As a pioneer in the treatment of lunacy he had few equals; as a bibiophile he was celebrated for his studies into the life and literary works of Sir Walter Ralegh. Moving to Budleigh Salterton in 1882 he carved out a secondary career during which he offered 72,000 entries to the newly emerging Oxford English Dictionary and made many other contributions to archaeology whilst collecting 10,000 volumes for his personal library. As an author he had interests as varied as medieval punishments and the church. When he died his loss was felt throughout Devon. iv

Roger Bowen was born in Swansea and has lived and worked in London and East Devon for 60 years. For most of this time he worked in industry in Exeter before retiring to Budleigh Salterton. During his career he was successively a member of the Engineering Industry Training Board, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in Exeter, chairman of the Engingeering Industry in the southwest, a governor of three schools, a member of the Employment Tribunals and, since 2004 as the founder of the Budleigh Salterton Music Festival. He has been engaged in charity work and has been a member of the local council. Since 1992 he has been chairman of the Devon Historic Buildings Trust during which time some 14 of Devon’s iconic buildings have been restored to their former pristine condition. Many interesting people have lived or are now living in Budleigh. Amongst these are Sir Walter Ralegh. the writers Fanny and Adolphus Trollope, the naturalist Dr Carter, broadcaster Alvar Lidell and, more recently, the broadcaster and journalist Sue Lawley and Booker prizewinning novelist Hilary Mantel, all of whom have contributed to Budleigh’s colourful history.
