When World War Two takes hold, the Dowling family of Combe House, Dorset, is unexpectedly thrown back together. Molly Dowling welcomes her daughter, Syd, home and reluctantly extends her hospitality to more family and mutual friends in need of lodgings in a safer environment. As the war progresses, the lives at Combe House and in the village, Great Morden, come under increasing strain. Syd tries to continue as normal but struggles with her family plans being put on hold while her husband, Douglas, is sent away to fight. The host of people that pass through the doors of Combe House, and the inhabitants themselves, become more and more dispirited, morale plummets as the war threatens the Home Front like never before. With the presence of death and destruction becoming more palpable, Syd begins to be more reckless. Her increased desire to live life to the full reaches climax as she submits to her desires to another man. Thrown instantly into turmoil over her adultery, Syd throws herself into philanthropy. Despite Syd’s previous internal focus, the war is unforgiving in its destruction as people of Great Morden and Combe House are persistently reminded of its presence, Syd must learn to accept her personal losses to do her bit for Britain.
