This is the paradox of Bernie Sanders. From one angle, Sanders typifies an anti-establishment rabble-rouser. His hoarse voice complemented by a rumpled suit jacket and his unkempt hair gives the impression of an insurrectionist fresh off the barricades. From another angle, however, he epitomizes the establishment. He has been a Washington insider for a quarter of a century and held ranking positions on the Senate Budget Committee and Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. How does such a paradox compute? Ironically, the same sky-is-falling attitude that propelled Sanders into a lefty circle of peaceniks and utopians is what whisked him off to the halls of Congress.
