The ancient Christian writing which has come down to us under the name “The Epistle of Barnabas,” has been preserved both in a Latin version and a Greek version.

The translation of, and introduction to the work which are included in this edition, are taken from The Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol. I, first published in the Edinburgh edition in 1867, and subsequently in a revised American edition in 1885.

Sadly for the general reader who wishes simply to discover the meaning of this relic of the sub-apostolic era, the translation in the Ante-Nicene Fathers volume is littered with an enormous density of footnotes — 285 of them in a mere twenty-one chapters and an introduction — many of which bring to the reader’s notice often quite minor variations between the Latin and Greek texts. Such a density of footnotes merely disrupts the flow of what is already a quite difficult text.

The Simplified Edition seeks to present a more readable, unified text to the general reader, by removing those footnotes which point out manuscript variations; whilst retaining those, either which give the references for the writer’s many scriptural and sometimes apocryphal allusions, or which clarify the meaning of the text.
