Excerpt from First Lines of the Practice of Physic, Vol. 1 of 2
Whether the practice of Physic should admit of reasoning, or be entirely rested upon experience, has long been, and may still be, a matter of dispute. I shall not, however, at present, enter upon the discussion of this; because I can venture to assert, that, at almost all times, the practice has been, and still is, with every person, founded more or less, upon certain princi ples established by reasoning; and therefore, in attempting to offer some view of the present state of Physic, I must give an account of those systems of the principles of science which have lately prevailed, or may be supposed still to prevail in europe.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book fundamentally transforms the understanding and treatment of medicine as a science. Existing systems of the time, such as the Galenic, Chemical and Stahlion systems, had fallen into disrepute and were incomplete in many respects. The author recognized that a new approach was needed, that focused not only on the state of the fluids in the body but also the mechanical and organic systems. A major focus in the book is improving the categorization of diseases into a method of classification, which laid the groundwork for modern nosology. The approach and ideas put forth by this author had a major impact on subsequent medical practice and research.
