Written by the Greek mathematician Euclid in Alexandria around 300 BCE, its 13 books systematize mathematics and geometry as it was understood in the Hellenistic period. The body of the text is divided into geometry and number theory with geometry comprising six books covering deductive reasoning, plane and solid figures, circles, similar figures, and proportions. Books 7-9 extend these concepts to number theory, including odd and even numbers, primes, and irrationals. Books 10â"13 deal with the incommensurability of segments and the construction of regular solids, known as Platonic solids. The Elements has influenced the development of mathematics down to the present day, acting as a standard textbook for teaching mathematics in Europe from around the time of its rediscovery in Medieval Europe until the 19th century. As such, the Elements played a significant role in the rise of modern science and has been integral to the development of mathematics itself, including geometry, number theory, and logic. Its influence on Western thought in general cannot be overstated.
