Many thoroughly genuine ple-ces of furniture of course exist which are devoid of this most desirable surface-con dition, but the wise collector leaves these alone, whilst the less critical man will do well to eschew them until he is an advanced judge. The patinated condition, in fact, constitutes not only a hall-mark, but an added beauty, just as an old-fashioned lawn excels all those of modern creation, given similar conditions and surroundings. T\this falling short may be due to one or more of a host of reasons. The example may have been neglected or have stood in a damp or an exposed position, such as a stable, a barn, or an outhouse, and in mentioning this it IS cui'ious how old Jacobean chests, for instance, are frequently found in stables acting as corn-bins.
