This book is for anyone who wants to learn how to read music, especially those who might be afraid that it’s too hard or think it will take a long time to learn. Luckily, the exercises contained within The Treble Clef make learning the notes on the staff fun and EASY in a unique way unlike any other method. When reading music, each note contains two types of information - the pitch and the rhythm. Musikpak’s The Clef series deals strictly with pitch allowing the brain to easily learn each letter name and how it relates to ones instrument. The first exercise starts with only three notes. Gradually more notes are added one at a time until the entire staff is learned, including two ledger lines above and below. There are no accidentals in this book and rhythmically every note is a quarter note. When first starting out, play each note at a comfortable pace without feeling the need to go fast or steady. Eventually as the notes become more familiar, practice with a metronome at a slow pace and increase the speed as proficiency is gained. To learn about rhythm, check out musikpak’s Rhythm Workout books. You’ll be shocked at the simplicity of the exercises and once combined, you’ll have a firm understanding of how to read music!

Steve Tirpak is a fourth generation musician who began teaching private lessons at his parents music studio. After graduating from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a degree in music composition, Steve began writing tailor made exercises for his students that addressed common problems they encountered while using traditional method books. By separating musical concepts such as rhythm and pitch, Steve’s students made rapid progress. Steve taught at The Kimmel Center’s Creative Music Program (Philadelphia, PA) and provided instruction to talented youth, accepted by audition only. Many of Steve’s students have received full scholarships at prestigious universities including The Manhattan School of Music, NYU, Berklee College of Music, The New School, The University of the Arts and Temple University. At the time of this printing, two of his students were accepted and performed with The National Grammy Jazz Band. Steve has also written music for many major label recording artists including Jay-Z, John Legend, Lana Del Rey, Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Will Smith, LL Cool J, Estelle, George Michael, The Roots, India Arie, Whitney Houston as well as music for The MTV Movie Awards, The Oscars, The BET Honors Awards and VH1’s Dear Mama Awards.
