INTRODUCTION This book, FUNCTIONAL LEADERSHIP: LESSON FOR CHURCH LEADERS, is a product of meditation and inspiration. The seven verses in the second book of the Kings chapter six could be expanded into a bigger volume than this. The brief story is packed full of lessons for humanity, especially for those in various leadership positions in life. In summary, it depicts understanding and cooperation between the pastor and the church members as exemplified by the key players in the grips story, Prophet Elisha and his student pastors. Mission activities are getting stalled in the church as a result of lack of genuine commitment by both the pastor and church members. Chapter one opens with the pastor’s blur vision on members’ predicament. A good welfare package for the church is an attractive sermon on its own. Its conversion power spreads like wild fire. Chapters two to three progress into seeing the students’ suggestion becoming a workable tool fashioned into practical agreement and a resolution for immediate action. Chapters four to six contextualize the happenings between Elisha and his students. Music becomes a noise when the instruments are not in harmony with one another. Many of today’s congregations are in disarray. Pastor and members are constantly in disagreement, a contrast to what happened between Elisha and his students. This book is set out to highlight some leadership problems in the church, the causes and some practical solutions. I have tried to encourage ministers, which includes every church worker to study their gifts and position themselves in their peak call, the most important gift for optimum performance. A student will suffer the consequences of succumbing to popular opinion when he chooses a highly respected and intensive university course for which he had weak passes in the subjects at the certificate level. This is the exact situation of some of our pastors, who by their gifts, are not positioned as resident pastoral ministers, but they are there. There are also suggestions contain herein for such ministers to reposition themselves for better performance if it is difficult reverting to the peak call. This book appears to be critical of some ministers but it is the reality on ground in the church. You might not believe your congregation could benefit immensely from this work until you open up to the leadership of the Holy Spirit as you read through this book.. I recommend this book to pastors, church workers even the ordinary man who jumps from one business to the other without success. If you know your talent, you will know what business to do. I also recommend it to counselors and Christian libraries. There is inestimable wisdom inside, grab a copy. Dn. J.A. Ayemidejo August 2006
