Volume 1 of the series, High Level Connectionist Models , is reviewed in the September 1991 SciTech Book News. Volumes 2 and 3 are closely related in content, and both have the same introductory chapter, which discusses some issues that underlie both volumes. The chapters in Volume 2 are of two sorts. Those in Part I describe specific connectionist or partially connectionist systems aimed at performing a large part of the whole task of analogy-based reasoning. The chapters in Part II, on the other hand, are more restricted in focus, and concentrate on the mapping phase of analogy. They address particular analogic mapping techniques and constraints, the role of mapping in similarity judgments, and the nature of connectionist support for analogical mapping.
