The purpose of this text is to inform the student about policing in American society. The author begins with an overview of who the police are and what their duties entail in the first chapter. The text moves on to an outline of the history of policing in America followed by a discussion of the modern organization of police agencies. The author offers discussions about police management, police discretion, police use of force, police culture and behavior, ethics and deviance, civil liability, and the future of policing in America. The text also includes a chapter on police strategies for controlling the drug problem in modern society. The author includes many theoretical analyses of these topics using such theories as human relations organizational theory and systems theory, among others. The goal of the study guide is to help the reader of the textbook understand the main components of the text chapters. Each chapter of the study guide first presents a chapter outline in which the main themes of the text chapter are displayed. Next, the study guide offers a section on the key concepts of the text chapter, with corresponding definitions. Finally, each chapter of the study guide tests a reader's comprehension by providing fill-in-the-blank questions of the main terms of the text chapter. The answers for these questions are located at the back of the study guide.
