Since Pierre le Moyne, Sieur dIberville, first held the office, the governorship of Louisiana has been occupied by a succession of influential figures. First the French, then the Spanish, and finally the Americans presided over the affairs of the developing state. This diversity of cultures, reflected in the people who have occupied the states highest office, remains one of the strengths of modern Louisiana. Many of Louisiana's governors were capable leaders whose constructive actions contributed to the development of thestate. Theirs are the accomplishments that remain etched in the history of a progressive, diverse people. A few were men of uncommon skill, foresight, and determination. Their forceful leadership often transcended the boundaries of the state and influenced national and international affairs. However, not all governors were equal to the tasks that faced them, and little evidence has endured to inform us about their unsuccessful terms in office. The Governors of Louisiana presents concise biographical sketches and photographs of each of the Pelican State's governors, beginning with Pierre le Moyne in 1699. Twenty-nine of the photographs show the bronze bas-relief portraits of the governors that are cast on the elevator doors at the Capitol building in Baton Rouge. This updated edition includes Kathleen Blanco, the first woman elected to that office in Louisiana. The other volumes in this series, The Governors of Alabama (pb [F]), The Governors of Mississippi (pb [F]), The Governors of Tennessee: 2nd Edition (pb), and The Governors of Texas (pb [F]), are also available from Pelican.

Dalla seconda/terza di copertina:

From Pierre le Moyne, Sieur d'Iberville, the first man to hold the office, the governorship of Louisiana has been occupied by a succession of history-making figures. There was Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, governor from 1713 to 1716, who founded Detroit in 1701 and whose name now graces millions of automobiles. Jimmie Davis is known for composing one of the most famous songs in the world, "You Are My Sunshine," now the state song. Murphy James Foster served two terms, through catastrophic flooding and social unrest. His grandson, Murphy J. ("Mike") Foster, also served two terms as governor 100 years later.

This volume presents concise biographical sketches of each of Louisiana's governors, from 1699 to the present. For the first time in a single work, portraits of sixty-seven Louisiana governors are included, from early colonial times to the election of the first woman governor, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, in 2003.

The late Miriam G. Reeves was a native of East Feliciana Parish and a life-long student of her home state. She held a bachelor of arts degree from Centenary College and a master of science from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and later did post-graduate work at Columbia University. She served for many years with the Louisiana State Department of Education.

Dalla quarta di copertina:

This volume presents concise biographical sketches of each of Louisiana's governors, from 1699 to the present. Portraits of sixty-seven Louisiana governors are included, from early colonial times to the present.

Louisiana's colorful political history began with its first governor, Jean Baptiste le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, who founded New Orleans and made it the capital of the colony in 1722. Two centuries later, Huey P. Long, who advocated redistribution of wealth, increased funding to Louisiana State University and built LSU Medical School. He became nationally known for his boisterous behavior when he left his second term as governor to serve in the United States Senate. In 2003, Louisiana elected the state's first woman governor, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco.

The Governors of Louisiana is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the state, where readers will learn important facts about each term, including:

Which Louisiana governor . . .
. . . founded Detroit and has an automobile
named after him?
. . . lost an arm and a foot in battle?
. . . resigned to become a judge?
. . . was elected but did not serve?
. . . was the first Democratic governor?
. . . wrote the world-famous song "You Are My
Sunshine"?
