Though at times he was a “bear” and was known to have a “fierce and violent temper”, Lee nonetheless had a heart that author Thomas J. Forehand contests was “as soft as velvet”. Through letters, diary excerpts, and touching stories, Forehand demonstrates in this collection of antecdotes and quotes displaying Lee’s tender side that Lee was indeed a peacemaker in his personal life, full of compassion and a gentle nature that his family and others who encountered him thankfully recorded. One cadet’s mother wrote in her diary that Lee was “very human, kind, and calm”, and Lee’s letters home to his wife and children about various animals, from the kitten he wishes to adopt, to his son’s account of his father’s beloved dog “Spec” and the account of Lee’s pet hen who was in attendance at Gettysburg, illuminate the man behind the marble.

Dalla quarta di copertina:

"Lee is an admirable figure from our past. He was a complex man whose many facets continue to attract study and emulation. This book reveals more of a great American."
--Michael R. Bradley, Professor Emeritus, U.S. history, Motlow State College (Lynchburg, TN) and author of Nathan Bedford Forrest's Escort and Staff

Gen. Robert E. Lee's impressive acts of chivalry, compassion shown towards his enemies, fondness for animals, and tenderness towards family and friends are lesser-known than other facets of his otherwise well-recorded persona. This book offers surprising glimpses of Lee's more merciful side and gives evidence that this fierce leader is more than the "marble man" he was known as.

Serving as a perfect companion to Forehand's first compilation, Robert E. Lee's Lighter Side, this collection includes letters, diary excerpts, and touching stories from Lee himself, as well as his wife, children, students, and strangers who recorded his acts of kindness. Chapters include examples of Lee's expressions of sensitivity towards family, fellow soldiers, slaves, and others, documenting his full humanity.

Thomas Forehand, Jr., grew up in Burns, Tennessee. Since the summer of 2001, he has portrayed Robert E. Lee at Sons of Confederate Veterans camps, historical societies, United Daughters of the Confederacy chapters, and other historically interested groups. In 2004, he was granted the Robert E. Lee Award from the Tennessee Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans for his authentic portrayals.
