John Mulgan was born in Christchurch, New Zealand on 31 December 1911. He studied at Auckland University before moving to England to study at Oxford. His only novel, Man Alone (published in 1939) is regarded as one of the classic landmarks of an independent New Zealand literature. He was awarded the Military Cross as a result of his wartime service in Greece. He died in Cairo on 26 April 1945.
Professor M. R. D. Foot CBE has an international reputation as a modern historian, author and commentator. His best known works have been the official histories of SOE operations in North West Europe during the Second World War. Known as `Mr Resistance', he remains a highly respected figure whose knowledge of secret operations remains unrivalled. He regularly reviews works in the Spectator and the Times Literary Supplement.
Peter Whiteford teaches English Literature at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, where he is an Associate Professor and Head of the School of English, Film, Theatre and Media Studies. He has published widely in the areas of medieval literature and New Zealand literature, and is currently working on a new edition of John Mulgan's novel Man Alone and a selection of Mulgan's letters.
