Riz, a baby roseate spoonbill, is left alone in her nest when her parents are off searching for food. She steps out of the protection of her nest and immediately sees a flamingo. She falls in love with the flamingo but things don't exactly go Riz's way. Riz will meet a few birds and question a few things in this story. ~The story is illustrated by Max Connolly, a sixth grade student who was in Mrs. Andino's fourth and fifth grade class over a two year period. Max is a good writer and a talented artist, so it only made sense that Max would take on the project of illustrating Mrs. Andino's first book.

Sarah Andino is a teacher and mother of twin boys. She lives with her husband, boys, dogs, and blind cavefish in Northern Virginia. Oh, and she loves the color pink! When she lived in Florida, she taught fourth grade in both St. Petersburg and Fort Myers. Often, on her way to work in both of those places, she would see Spoonbills along the side of the roadway. Wherever there was water, there could be spoonbills. These magnificent birds soon became her favorite due to their pink hues and unique noses! Sarah believes you have to stand out and the Spoonbill definitely does that! She wrote about a spoonbill wanting to look like something else, a beautiful flamingo. She feels kids will identify with this and hopefully learn that we are all perfect just the way we are. Sarah chose to have a former student, Max, illustrate this book because kids are awesome and they deserve to show off.
