It first examines the development of Winnicott's thinking through his own life time (first generation) and then continues this exploration by viewing the thinking in members of the group with a strong likelihood of influence from him; his analysands (second generation) and their analysands (third generation).

Margaret Boyle Spelman is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist. Having worked for over three decades as a clinical psychologist in the Irish Health Services, she has also been in private practice as a psychologist and psychotherapist since 1998. She has served on the Executive Council and Boards of the Psychological Society of Ireland, The Irish Forum for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, The Irish Council for Psychotherapy, and is Vice-Chairperson for its Psychoanalytic Section. She has also published a volume entitled Winnicott's Babies and Winnicott's Patient's which compares the application of Winnicott's thinking in the developmental and adult clinical situations.
