The Gallipoli expedition of 1915 was designed to knock the Turkish Empire out of the First World War and open a supply route to Russia. Characterised by outstanding courage and determination, the campaign is also remembered for the appalling military incompetence in the higher commands of both sides.

His main area of research covers the Napoleonic Wars. He has written some forty books, including more than 20 Osprey titles, and innumerable articles and papers on military history, but still finds time to indulge in his other great passion: cricket.
