During the 1980s and 1990s the Marsh Dwellers of Iraq were subjected to a sustained attack by Saddam Hussein's government, which resulted in the draining of the marshes, the systematic depopulation of the Marshlands and the obliteration of a way of life which had altered little since Sumerian times.
In the face of such an assault the Marsh Dwellers themselves had three options - remain in the drained Marshlands, deprived of their inherited water-based means of livelihood; submit to compulsory resettlement elsewhere in Iraq; or leave the country as refugees. Some 200,000 people chose the third option and crossed the border into Iran, where they now live in refugee camps and settlements.
For over a decade the AMAR appeal, founded by Emma Nicholson in the aftermath of the Gulf War in 1991, has been closely concerned with the welfare of the displaced Marsh Dwellers, delivering medical, educational and social support. As part of that endeavour AMAR has commissioned an international team of authorities to report on different aspects of the Marsh Dwellers' situation - historical, economic, legal and political - and in presenting their findings this book provides an extraordinarily comprehensive and detailed account of the plight of a people largely forgotten by the rest of the world.
