This book traces the Jean Buxton's family history from the mid 19th to the late 20th century. She describes the people and their way of living as time marches on, linking the counties of Wiltshire and Norfolk. The central character is her father, Wing Commander Geoffrey John Buxton MBE, who served with T E Lawrence [Lawrence of Arabia] in the RAF in 1922, when they were both recruits for photographic training, and who went on to photograph life and events particularly in Aden, Somaliland, Abyssinia and Africa during his service career.From his diary covering 1940 to 1942, notes and photographs, it has been possible to record his personal account of the siege of Malta in World War Two, when the island was awarded the George Cross. In contrast the author recalls her memories of what it was like to be a child in wartime Britain. The story continues into the postwar years, and finishes with the death of her father in 1989.The photographs, mostly taken by Geoffrey Buxton, are an integral part of the book. They have been prepared for publication by Alan Wildsmith-Towle FBIPP, FMPA, FRPS, a professional photographer, who was educated at the Joseph Wright School of Art and Derby College of Art, receiving part of his photographic training at the School of Photography at RAF Wellesbourne Mountford, some 5 years after Jean's father had been Commanding Officer. When he saw Jean's father's photographs he realised how good they were and told her they should be published. Using his RAF experience and photographic knowledge he has been able to contribute much to this book. He continues to run a small photographic studio in Derbyshire.
