The initial fighting in 1914 was against the French prior to the arrival of the British Army. The 1916 Allied Offensive eventually resulted in the German withdrawal but only at a terrible cost to both sides. The 1918 Kaiserschlacht saw the Germans return, albeit briefly.Each phase is covered from the German perspective using primary and secondary sources. L'autore

David Bilton is now firmly established as an authority on the Great War. The Hull Pals, his first work for Pen and Sword Books (1999) was critically acclaimed and used for reference in the production of the BBC2 series The Trench. He enjoyed further success with his book also entitled The Trench (Pen and Sword). He has been involved with a number of other TV productions and has recently been the pre-production researcher for a future Great War television project for the BBC. A schoolmaster, he lives near Reading, Berkshire.
