The period 1850 to 1900 witnessed the most far reaching changes sporting gun and rifle design had ever experienced. Prior to this, changes had been pedestrian and the muzzle-loader still ruled the day in 1850 as it had done for previous centuries. Anyone who has the slightest interest in the engineering or history of gunmaking will find this book fascinating. The author is incredibly thorough in his research and authoritative approach. But more than that, he has the knack of making this occasionally complicated and technical subject easy to understand, and his sheer enthusiasm for the topic shines through.
