When university student Guido van Thool accidentally bumps into the beautiful ballerina Anna Zweig in Loti's cafe, it sets them off on a whirlwind of romance of ballet concerts, anti-globalisation marches and love trysts in bluebell woods. Even when Guido is called away for military service, time can't test their faithfulness, as they keep their passion warm with love letters. Paralleling their lives, however, is that of Judge Jeremiah Delahyde, a profligate positioned in power by his crony, the government minister Bartholomew Smythe. These parallel lives collide on New Year's Eve when the drunken judge knocks Anna down in his car with fatal consequences. Guido swears revenge. But how does one retaliate against a corrupt and powerful, politically appointed high court judge?

James Lawless’ poetry and prose have won many awards including the Scintilla Welsh Open Poetry competition, a WOW award, a Biscuit International short Story prize, The Cecil Day Lewis Award and a Hennessey award nomination for short stories. His story, Jolt, was shortlisted for the Willesden Prize and appeared in New Short Stories 1, edited by Zadie Smith (London/ New York, Willesden Herald, 2007). He is the author of a sell-received poetry collection Rus in Urbe and of the critically-acclaimed novels, Peeling Oranges, For Love of Anna, The Avenue, Finding Penelope and Knowing Women, and a study of modern poetry Clearing The Tangled Wood: Poetry as a Way of Seeing the World, for which he received an arts bursary.
