Salisbury Cathedral is a famously beautiful work of ecclesiastical architecture and an extraordinary achievement, unique among medieval English cathedrals - erected within about 40 years in a single style (Early English Gothic), the only substantial additions being the tower and spire, which were built in the English Decorated style and completed by about 1330. The remarkable building is a testimony to the faith, skill, craftsmanship and endeavour of those who raised it.
As a fitting testament to the spectacular architecture, this lavishly illustrated book explores Salisbury Cathedral by focusing on the construction itself, and it offers a fascinating account of what makes this structure so special.
The historian and archaeologist Tim Tatton-Brown has spent more than twenty years examining the fabric of the building. Here he presents some of the fruits of his research. He reveals the story of how one of the great medieval cathedrals was built, from the laying of the very first foundations in 1219 to the completion of the great spire, the tallest in Britain at 122 metres high.
Drawing on history and geology as well as his expertise in architecture, he shows the wider context of the building, situating its development against the background of English politics of successive ages, including the era of medieval monarchs and powerful bishops, and the high drama of the Reformation, Civil War and Restoration. He also discusses the earlier cathedral at Old Sarum. He covers with similar authority those relatively few changes that have taken place to Salisbury Cathedral's structure since it was first erected, including the significant renovations of the fifteenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, right up to the recent installation of a fine new font.
Tim Tatton-Brown's text is accompanied by outstanding new pictures by the photographer John Crook, along with numerous detailed drawings, engravings and other illustrations. Together, through words and pictures, they present the grand genius and the glory of this world-famous cathedral.
