This is the third book in the trilogy by Fischer which, having explored language and writing, focuses on reading. This method of 'extracting visual information from any encoded system and comprehending the respective meaning' has its roots in the ancient world and this study begins in 4th millennium BC Mesopotamia where the process of empowerment through reading is deemed to have begun. The story of reading is thus presented from the earliest symbols and scripts of the Near East to the modern electronic age of reading on a computer screen. Different types of reading are discussed from different periods and different parts of the world and, although the primary focus is on the west, the Far East and Americas are mentioned. Fischer examines the development of silent reading, liturgical reading, reading in education, the origins and expansion of the book trade, newspapers, libraries and forbidden reading, to name just a few subjects.
