There followed an extraordinary adventure as 17 survivors set out in a longboat, itself wrecked on the Victoria coast, culminating in a 400 mile foot trek to Port Jackson- the first recorded overland expedition of any magnitude by Europeans in Australia which is still largely unrecognised.
