Starting with an assessment of three famous universal theories of history: Spengler's The Decline of the West, and those of Toynbee and Hegel, Peter Cruttwell puts forward a simpler theory based on three "drives" (Subsistential, Metaphysical, and Power) by which we human beings have striven to control our world. He argues that the only strategy that addresses all the interlinked aspects of the present crisis is for each nation-state to commit itself to self-sufficiency within its natural constraints (what Aristotle called Autarky), so that the madness of today's Global Village will cease to impose undeliverable demands on the Earth and its inhabitants.
