In 2008, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Council for British Archaeologys Wessex group, archaeologists gathered in Southampton to review what we have learnt from the huge amount of research carried out in the region during the past 50 years and to identify the challenges for the next half-century. The volume is edited byDr Rowan Whimster, formerly of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments of England, and now a freelance editorial consultant. He currently produces Conservation Bulletin for English Heritage. A specialist in aerial photography, Dr Whimster's publications include: The emerging past: air photography and the buried landscape. There are over 30 contributors to the volume including: Professor Barry Cunliffe, Emeritus Professor of European Archaeology, University of Oxford; Professor Mike Fulford, University of Reading, Professor Mike Parker Pearson, University of Sheffield, Dr Joshua Pollard, University of Bristol, Emeritus Professor David Hinton, University of Southampton, Julian Richards, Mike Pitts and Phil Harding.
