What it Takes was conceived by Putney based photographer Julian Andrews as a celebration of the historic 150th Putney to Mortlake University Boat Race.
Julian, a professional photographer of 17 years, has recorded the performances and lives of sports-people at the highest level. For this book, he decided to look at amateur athletes at the top of their sport. He followed the Oxford and Cambridge squads for several months, often living with them for days at a time. His record captures their lives both on and off the water as they strove to win a place in their respective crews. Julian's journey took him skiing in Switzerland and rowing in Spain in the harsh depths of winter, as well as hours on various stretches of water in the UK.
