Birth pain has been an extremely controversial topic, especially in the last few years. It s a topic which is often taboo; dividing people in specific areas. ... Health care professionals can use this book, to find out the reasons for birth pain and the apparent solutions to it. Uniquely pain is discussed with psychological impacts and with both physiological and pharmacological approaches. Using minimal and, what appears after reading it, obvious techniques, women can approach birth with pain in context and no fear. With an array of excellent evidence; all advantages and disadvantages are fully discussed including the elective caesarean , as a method to avoid birth pain. Also included are direct comparisons between psychoprohylaxis and active methods for example pitting control against surrendering and letting one self go. A few quotes stand out from this book for example: Medical technology tries to shut out pain because its purpose is to try and control nature and hide weakness. L'autore:

Verena Schmid is an independent midwife from Italy with over 30 years' experience. In 1985 she founded a midwifery centre and a school of midwifery, which she has directed since 1996. She is the founder of a professional magazine for midwives, author of four books (in Italian) and co-author of nine others. In the year 2000 she received the International Astrid Limburg Award for her commitment to promoting independent midwifery and normal, physiological birth in Italy.
