Written to be accessible to lay readers and historians alike, Dark Realities: America's Great Depression is a straightforward chronicle of some of the bleakest years in America's history. Chapters examine the boom years of the roaring twenties that led to a horrendous stock market crash, the post-World War I economic struggles of Europe, the immense hardship that precipitated bank failures, deindustrialization, rampant poverty and unemployment, even strikes and riots, President Hoover's well-meaning but ultimately ineffective measures to help, and President Roosevelt's New Deal. Dark Realities does not support the neo-conservative talking point that Roosevelt's New Deal allegedly prolonged and deepened the Great Depression. 'Perhaps as important as the relief provided, the policies of President Roosevelt and his administrations also gave ordinary people hope that their lives would eventually improve. But whether the new Deal policies themselves actually halted the Depression, or whether they just helped alleviate some of its more extreme symptoms is debatable. It is notable that when steps were taken in 1937 to try to cut back the level of federal-sponsored relief, the result was almost immediate recession.' Now a partner at City law firm SJ Berwin LLP, he has for many years been interested in the history of finance and business.
